Tarik Skubal Rethinking His One-Start WBC Plan

Skubal made his one start against Great Britain
Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal entered the 2026 World Baseball Classic with a clear plan: make one start for Team USA, then return to Tigers camp to prepare for the MLB season.
That plan may already be changing.
After pitching three innings with five strikeouts in Team USA’s 9–1 win over Great Britain, Skubal admitted the emotional experience of representing his country has made him reconsider leaving the tournament early. He said he will discuss the decision with the Tigers, his family, and his agent before making a final call.
Skubal originally limited himself to one appearance to protect his workload heading into a pivotal MLB season and potential free agency next winter. But the atmosphere inside the Team USA clubhouse and the chance to chase a WBC title has complicated that plan.
OUR TAKE
This is the tension modern international baseball keeps running into.
Players want the WBC to feel like a true championship. Teams want their most valuable arms healthy for six months of MLB games.
Skubal sits directly in the middle of that conflict. He’s arguably the most dominant pitcher on the planet right now, coming off back-to-back Cy Young seasons, and he’s entering a contract year that could reshape his career earnings.
Pitching another game for Team USA would be thrilling for fans and the tournament. But from a career standpoint, it’s a meaningful risk.
What makes this interesting is the emotional pull. Skubal thought one appearance would be enough. Actually pitching in the tournament made walking away harder.
That’s exactly the balance the WBC keeps testing.
Jurickson Profar Suspended for Entire Season After Second PED Violation
Atlanta Braves outfielder Jurickson Profar has been suspended 162 games after testing positive for a banned performance-enhancing substance. Because it is his second violation in the past year, the penalty automatically escalates to a full-season suspension.
MLB said the test revealed exogenous testosterone and its metabolites, substances prohibited under the league’s drug policy. Profar previously served an 80-game suspension in 2025, and this latest ruling means he will miss the entire 2026 season and forfeit his $15 million salary.

Profar is suspended 162 games
OUR TAKE
Second violations remove the gray area.
One positive test might be explained away. Two in consecutive seasons turns it into a pattern.
For the Braves, the impact is immediate. Profar was expected to be a middle-of-the-order presence, and now Atlanta loses that production for the entire year.
The competitive loss hurts, but the reputational damage often lasts longer.
High Schooler Joseph Contreras Gets Aaron Judge to Ground Into Double Play

Contreras was projected to be a second-round draft pick before the WBC.
One week ago, 17-year-old Joseph Contreras was pitching against high school hitters in Georgia. This week, he was facing Aaron Judge in the World Baseball Classic.
Contreras, the son of former MLB pitcher José Contreras, entered a bases-loaded situation for Brazil and got Judge to hit a broken-bat grounder that turned into an inning-ending double play. The moment quickly became one of the standout scenes of the early tournament.
The youngest player in the entire WBC, Contreras still attends Blessed Trinity Catholic High School in Roswell, Georgia, throws in the high-90s, and is committed to Vanderbilt.
OUR TAKE
The WBC produces moments baseball rarely can.
A high school pitcher facing one of the biggest stars in the sport simply doesn’t happen in the normal structure of baseball. International tournaments collapse the usual development ladder and create matchups that would otherwise take years to happen.
For Contreras, the moment will live forever. For scouts, it’s another reminder of the ceiling attached to his arm.
And for the tournament, it’s exactly the kind of unpredictable moment that makes the World Baseball Classic special.
New Video: What If David Wright Never Got Hurt?
Few players in modern baseball meant more to their franchise than David Wright did to the New York Mets.
Before spinal stenosis and neck injuries derailed his career, Wright looked like a future Hall of Fame third baseman. He was a seven-time All-Star, the face of the Mets for over a decade, and one of the most complete hitters in baseball during his prime.
In our newest Baseball Authority video, we break down the career trajectory Wright was on, how the injuries changed everything, and what his legacy might look like if his body had held up.
OUR TAKE
Few “what ifs” in baseball hit as hard as this one.
Wright wasn’t just productive, he was foundational. He represented stability for a franchise that rarely had it. When injuries took him off the field, the Mets didn’t just lose a third baseman. They lost the centerpiece of an era.
Projecting alternate careers is always speculative. But Wright’s trajectory wasn’t subtle. It was historic.
That’s what makes the question so compelling.
